Hire a licensed guide, or just ski the snowy “Sun Road” into a winter wonderland.

Glacier National Park offers some of the most beautiful sightseeing in the world. Referred to as the “Crown of the Continent”, the Park has beautiful peaks and mountainous bowls sculptured by centuries of glaciers. Although the glaciers of Glacier National Park are rapidly disappearing, you can still see many when you choose to hike some of the back country’s 700 miles of trails – a true hiker’s paradise.

See many forms of wildlife including mountain goats, bighorn sheep and occasionally bear, deer, elk and moose. Drive by beautiful Lake McDonald and shoot photos of the lake with the Garden Wall in the background. Take a short hike on the Trail of the Cedars at the Avalanche Lake area or Hidden Lake Trail at Logan Pass. Or if you are a bit more adventurous, backpack into the Granite Park Chalet or Sperry Chalet area.

Whitefish Mountain Resort

Whitefish Mountain Resort, a gem of northwestern Montana wilderness, is located on Big Mountain only eight miles outside the town of Whitefish. From ziplining to mountain biking to winter classics like skiing and snowshoeing, Whitefish Mountain Resort has 3,000 acres of land and facilities, all catered to your outdoor excitement. The resort is prepared for every season and has plenty of options to choose from whether you visit on a hot summer afternoon or the day after a powdery snowfall.

The resort got its informal start in the early 20th century, when Whitefish locals began traversing Big Mountain recreationally, forming natural ski paths and trails up and down the mountain. The Whitefish Lake Ski Club built the first official trails on the mountain in the 1930s, thanks to a permit from the U.S. Forest Service. The business enterprise that followed was a community effort, with Whitefish residents volunteering their free time to curate trails and slopes along the mountain, building a resort that locals and tourists alike could enjoy.

When you stay in the town of Whitefish, transportation is readily available to get to and from Whitefish Mountain Resort via the S.N.O.W. Bus system. This convenient bus route travels from downtown to Whitefish Mountain Resort multiple times a day, and even has a stop at The Pine Lodge on Whitefish River in the winter months. Additionally, The Pine Lodge sells lift tickets directly from our Front Desk, and offers our new Ski Van transportation for a direct commute up or down the mountain, saving you time and energy so that you can spend it on the slopes instead!

The Whitefish Trail

This growing trail system currently offers 42 miles of natural-surface trail accessed by 12 trailheads and provides a great variety of easy-to-locate and navigate recreation opportunities on public and private lands that will ultimately create a 55+ mile recreational loop surrounding Whitefish. Averill Hospitality is honored to participate in the Whitefish Legacy Partners "Adopt a Trail" program to maintain the Lower Haskill portion of the Whitefish Trail, just minutes from The Pine Lodge.
